Week of Miracles in Portugal!

September 1, 2014

So this week has been crazy but really awesome. I’ll just start out with one of the first miracles. We met with this guy named T last week and taught him the first lesson. He was really interested and receptive and agreed to be baptized. He also told us during the lesson that he was out of work and was looking for a job. We promised him that if he would read the Book of Mormon and pray about it, he would be able to find work.
So this week we stopped by T’s house at the scheduled time and he wasn’t there. We were pretty sad because we knew he was golden. We called him and he didn’t answer. A little while later he texted us and said that he was actually in another nearby city now. He told us that the same day we had taught him he was feeling really good, so he sat down and was reading the Book of Mormon when he got a phone call from employers in the other city. They told him they wanted him to come up and work immediately. In his text he told us that he knows the Book of Mormon is true and is the word of God and he will definitely take it with him. What a miracle!!! It’s too bad that we won’t be able to teach him anymore, but I know that the missionaries there will take good care of him. It is sooooo cool to be here to witness the Lord’s hand in everything!

So the next miracle happened on Saturday. Elder S had been working with his former companion, with a woman named J. Since I got here we had been trying to contact her all the time because she was ready to get baptized, but we couldn’t get hold of her. So Saturday around noon we knocked on her door and she was home! We tried to set up a baptism for next week sometime, but nothing seemed to be working because she had to work, which is was a bummer because she really wanted to be baptized. Anyway, she asked us if she could be baptized TODAY, and we told her probably, we just needed to make some phone calls. So we called up the zone leaders, and the president and everyone and planned her baptism for 6 pm that same night! When the baptism started though, nobody showed up, just the two zone leaders and us. We went to the font and we were about to perform the ordinance when the Branch President and his whole family walked in to witness this wonderful occasion. It was fabulous and afterwards we were able to have a family home evening with J and her daughter in the President’s home. It was a miracle. Everything just fell into place. God really wanted this wonderful woman to be baptized into the only true church on the earth.

So, last night at 10:30, Elder S got an emergency transfer and had to be on a train at 11 this morning! I now have a new trainer, Elder D, who is awesome too! He’s been out a long time and this is his last transfer before he goes home, so we’ve got to make it a good one. He’s never been to this city, so I have to show him where everything is and where everybody lives. I now wish I had paid a little more attention to where we were going when I had the chance…I thought I would have 4 more weeks at least to figure it all out… But the work goes on. Elder S is zone leader in another zone now and I have a former Assistant to the President as my 2nd trainer. Things are crazy here to say the least. I hope I can remember where everybody lives!

One of Elder Zwahlen's favorite scriptures is Alma 29:1-2 "O that I were an angel, and could have the wish of mine heart, that I might go forth and speak with the trump of God, with a voice to shake the earth, and cry repentance unto every people! Yea, I would declare unto every soul, as with the voice of thunder, repentance and the plan of redemption, that they should repent and come unto our God, that there might not be more sorrow upon all the face of the earth."
