Hey Mom and Dad,
The temple groundbreaking should be really cool. There is actually a lot of excitement about it recently. They’ve posted a picture of how the temple should look in the church and I also heard that the stake president has been going around to all the various wards and branches and holding up that same picture as he gives his talk, telling the members that they all need to go there. I don’t know if we are going to be able to watch it live, but we’ll probably see it eventually.
So this week went really fast and I don’t have tons to say this week, but I would like to share one really cool miracle.
We have a 24-year old recent convert girl from Cape Verde. She’s an amazing person and likes us a lot, but recently she’s been a little lazy and hasn’t been coming to church. We’ve been trying really hard over the past month to get her to read the Book of Mormon to help her strengthen her testimony. We told her to read a chapter and after 2 weeks of various reminders and visits she still hadn’t read it. Well, we were trying to figure out what we could do to incentivize her to read the Book of Mormon when we saw some other missionaries do something really cool. Preach My Gospel, in the book of Mormon chapter, has a list of “Questions of the Soul,” that the Book of Mormon answers. They took these questions and wrote them on little tabs and stuck them in an investigator’s Book of Mormon. We saw it and decided to try the same thing with our recent convert. It took a little while, but we got it prepared, and instead of marking a chapter for her to read, we simply told her that when she gets interested or has a question, to open up the book and read some of the questions. We returned about a week later and she told us the following,
“So, last night I couldn’t sleep at all. I was thinking a lot about my problems, and frankly I was having some doubts… So, I thought, I’ll open up the Book of Mormon and see what the Elders (she calls us “Os Rapazes”) have done.”
She said she opened right up to Alma 34 with the question, “What is my purpose in life?” She was like, “Wow, that’s exactly what I wanted to know.” Then she simply said, “Well, I ended up reading the whole chapter.” The Book of Mormon has the power to change lives.
We also had an investigator this week that says he really likes philosophy and history. He was talking about Egyptians before we even talked about the Book of Mormon, and then we started reading 1 Nephi 1, where Nephi tells that he was writing in the Language of the Egyptians. He looked up and had kind of an “Aha” moment. He was hooked.
Anyway, I started studying the Book of Mormon by these powerful questions. I really think you guys should try it!
Also, we visited this really cool Cathedral today called BATALHA.
I love you all!
